In response to the unfortunate incident on the eve of Australia Day between two Indian students and five men of mixed ethnic backgrounds, the Chinese Community Council of Australia (Victoria Chapter) (CCCAV) today urged authorities and the overall community to uplift its priorities around the promotion of cultural diversity and community harmony in Victoria and Australia on the wake of the unfortunate incidents on Indian students.

“It is extremely important for institutions like the education industry to increase its focus on promoting cultural diversity and community harmony amongst the new generation to further strengthen our mutual understanding and respect, said Dr Stanley Chiang, President of the Chinese Community Council of Australia (Victoria Chapter)

“Our nation and society is entrenched in multicultural community and harmony. The actions of a few should not influence policy changes for all. Migrants have contributed so much to Australia and Australia has given them the opportunity to start a new life. Multiculturalism has enabled ethnic communities to embrace and celebrate their traditions and heritage, while respecting and living Australian values and lifestyles.

CCCAV is urging both the Federal and Victorian Governments to further develop specific programs within the education sector to assist in promoting cultural diversity and community harmony. Such programs have an everlasting impact on the impressions and development of young people in this area.

"CCCAV would like to ensure that these incidents are no means causing damage to the diverse society we have in Victoria. It’s unfortunate that these engagements had to happen between different individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds. This demonstrates that there is still much work to do for our leaders and various industries to continue and push the message – a message that we are a tolerant, open and diverse society”, concluded Dr Chiang.
