Dr Anne Pang

Dr. Anne Pang is a successful business woman who has founded numerous businesses, whilst continuously been engaged in community work and has also published several books based on her PhD dissertation. Moreover, she is a renowned martial artist who has won many local, state and national Kung Fu championships.


Anne was a member of the first Taiwanese family to migrate to Australia in 1970. After graduating from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree, majoring in Asian Studies in 1980, she later attained her PhD at Monash University in the School of Languages, Culture and Linguistics in 2009. Her current publications include Huang Naishang – a Chinese Christian reformer in late Qing and early Republican China, (in English), Huang Naishang (in Chinese) and a chapter contribution in Salt and Light – More lives of faith that shaped Modern China.


As well as embarking on a career in insurance in 1981, Anne established various businesses with her husband including martial arts academies in mid 1970s, a real estate agency in Richmond in 1989, her own Women’s Self Defence School in 1992 and an Australian fine art consultancy, Artpreciation in 1999. She has also been part of the team in conducting educational seminars on fine art and co-ordinated many charity art auctions to raise funds for Hospitals, community groups, schools and disability organisations.


Meanwhile, Anne has been an instructor for Barry Pang Kung Fu Schools throughout Melbourne at major tertiary institutions such as Melbourne University, RMIT and Swinburne from the 1970s till present. In the past thirty years, Anne has contributed significantly to the teaching and cultivation of Chinese culture and Chinese martial arts in Melbourne. One of the highlights in her martial arts career is winning the Australasian Kung Fu Championship in 1987. She has also taught Self Defence at prominent secondary colleges such as Scotch College, Melbourne Girls’ Grammar, Lauriston, Balwyn Secondary High, Kew Secondary High and so on, earning her the reputation of the only female who has been awarded the Hall of Fame Award in Australia, for her contribution to self defence.


Anne is now semi-retired and hoping to expand her journey in community work. As well as raising funds for charity for the past ten years, she has been conducting free seminars called Wealth Creation with a group of philanthropic entrepreneurs to equip and mentor our youth with financial wisdom and a concern for others. Finally, her keen interest in thoroughbred racing has been rewarded with successes in the Magic Million, Caulfield Guineas and other Group races.
